Message from Principal Robb Gonda

Hastings Families,

The various brilliant colors of the Fall season are a reminder to me of the uniqueness of this special time of year and of our students. During the opening month of the school year I have witnessed our students working collaboratively during our Hastings In-reach Program and serving the community during our Hasting Outreach Program, both unique and special events kicking off year long educational experiences.

Additionally, in the classroom students are being thoughtful and creative in their continuing quest to not just learn information being presented, but also adapting and using what they are learning in new and interesting ways. This uniqueness does not stop during the school day, but is carried on through our many after school clubs and athletic events. As we delve deeper into the school year, I would invite you to attend and participate in the many learning opportunities at Hastings Middle School. We are continually looking to partner with parents and our greater learning community to ensure that unique experiences continue to occur to help our student serve, lead, and succeed.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank all of the members of our learning community for the support of Mr. Lloyd and the Hastings staff as we all grieve the loss of 8th Grade Language Arts teacher Lisa Lloyd. Your flexibility and understanding during this difficult time is appreciated.I could not imagine being in a more supportive environment than the one created by the many families that make up our community.

In the coming months, be on the look out for information on guest speakers coming to Hastings Middle School for both students and parents. Our focus will be on creating an inclusive informed environment that will ultimately benefit the learning happening each day in our classroom. Notes and News

HOP Day

On September 1, 2017, approximately 699 students, 30 parent volunteers, 6 grandparents and 75 faculty members had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the ninth annual Hastings HOP day. The Hastings Outreach Program (HOP) sponsored a day of service learning for all of our students and faculty. In keeping with our district's strategic plan, we wanted to provide all students and faculty with opportunities to be engaged in at least one service learning experience this year. Service to others is a crucial part in helping our students understand what it means to be citizens of a global community. Our goal was for students to understand how skills they learn in the classroom can be used for opportunities outside of the classroom.

Our day of service began with a guest speaker, David Tichsel and the day ended with a celebration sponsored by the PTO and a whole-school assembly to recap some of the service activities that students participated in throughout the day. We would like to thank the following people/organizations for their support:

Sixth grade students, staff and parents took part in various activities that helped give back to the local communities of Upper Arlington and surrounding areas. Students got the community involved by organizing a community food drive. Food collected was donated to Mid-Ohio Foodbank & Heart to Heart Food Pantry.

We also partnered up with Burbank Early Childhood Center, Mountview Preschool, St. Andrews Preschool, “Project Linus” and Ohio Health on HOP day.

Seventh grade students and staff visited Highbanks Metro Park, Whetstone Park, Indian Village, Franklin Park Conservatory, Camp Oty Okwa, and Battelle Darby Metro Park. Students put elements from their science, math, health, life skills, and PE curriculums into practice. Students learned about various jobs within their service site and worked in conjunction with the staffs.

Students volunteered their time participating in activities such as: weeding flower beds, mulching, pruning trails, tearing out invasive species and picking up litter.

LifeCare Alliance, sponsor of the Franklin County Meals on Wheels program, and its dining centers were one of the recipients of the service performed by the 8th grade students and staff. Students prepared food, organized meals, delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program, played Bingo and enjoyed lunch with some of the dining center patrons.

A second recipient of 8th grade service was National Church Residences at Mill Run and FIrst Community where students and staff took part in planned activities to encourage building interpersonal relationships with the elderly. The students also, interacted with the elderly at Whetstone Gardens Senior Center where there were small group interactions around noon.

A third location this year was the Worthington Resource Pantry and Neighborhood Services. Our students learned about their food bank and how they use resources donated to them to give back to the local community.

We visited Neighborhood Services where students were able to learn about this organization and the programs it sponsors (food pantry, tax services, school supply drive, etc.) and provide service cleaning, painting and stocking shelves.

The presence of Hastings students and staff was felt all throughout central Ohio on HOP Day! We look forward to carrying on the tradition again next year!

★ Ping Pong Club

Hastings Ping Pong Club meets on Friday afternoons in January and February from 3:30-4:30pm. No prior experience is necessary and the club is open to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Please note: because we meet on the same day as Ski Club, students in Ski Club are not eligible to participate in the Hastings Ping Pong Club. Yearbook Club

Yearbook Club will meet again on Thursday, September 24th from 3:30-4:30 in Ms. Egbert's classroom (Room 113). All sixth, seventh and eighth grade students are welcome to help create the annual HMS Yearbook. Students will plan the yearbook theme and appearance, take pictures at school and community events, and then organize the yearbook pages. ★Media Center News

The 6th-grade language arts classes recently visited the learning center to access a variety of resources, including NY Times and the UA Schools Digital Library. These students also learned how to install a QR extension to their laptops. They then used this new extension to scan QR codes linked to various book talks and reviews of popular fiction titles. 

★ Seventh-grade Pittsburgh Trip

Required Parent Meeting on Monday, October 10th from 7 to 8pm. We are getting excited for our first-ever class trip to Pittsburgh on November 3 & 4! At least one parent is required to attend the upcoming October 10th meeting in order for their child to attend. You will learn all of the logistics for the trip at this meeting along with a chance to meet your child's chaperone for the trip. See you there!

★ Cercle Français (French Club)

At Cercle Français, students experience French language and culture first hand.  We try French games and sports, make crafts, cook, celebrate French/Francophone holidays, traditions, and special events. Cercle Français meets once a month after school from 3:30-4:30 in Madame Smith's classroom (RM 214), and will have events all week for National French Week this November!  All 7th and 8th graders French students, as well as ALL 6th graders are welcome to join. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, September 19 and our second meeting will be Wednesday, October 18. Email Madame Smith at kbecksmith@uaschools.org with any questions!

★Ski Club

Please join us for our parent meeting on Monday October 23rd at 7pm, students are encouraged to come. Please try to attend even if you have participated in ski club in the past. At this meeting you will hear about how to join our club including pricing. After the meeting all the information on how to register will be available on our schoology page. Please use code V3BWM-SQC43 to join. No information will be posted on schoology or distributed about ski club until October 23rd.

We will start collecting forms to join ski club on Saturday October 28th. We will be located outside of the media center. The doors by the office will be unlocked. Please try to come during the designated time slots below:
6th grade: 10:00 - 10:30
7th grade: 10:30 - 11:00
8th grade: 11:00 - 11:30
anyone: 11:30 - noon

If you cannot make it on Saturday October 28th, we will also collect forms after school in room 215 starting October 30th. All forms are due by November 3rd.

Also if you like to rent or buy gear from Colorado Mountain Sports (previously located on on the corner of Henderson and Kenny) they have moved to a new location in Mill Run. The will be opening soon!

★ Deutschklub (German Club)
Students have the opportunity during Deutschklub to meet with fellow students to speak German and experience German holidays, traditions, games, and events. Meeting monthly, Deutschklub meetings are a great place to learn more about the language and culture and to have fun; all 7th and 8th grade German students and all 6th graders are welcome to join.

★Summer trip to Germany in 2019

Hastings and Jones will be partnering with EF Tours to offer a trip to Germany (and possibly Austria and Switzerland) in the summer of 2019. The trip is open to all 7th, 8th and 9th grade German students, as well as any 6th graders who plan to take German in the 7th grade. If you are interested in learning more about this unique opportunity please contact Frau Fischer (mfischer@uaschools.org).

MathCounts

Do you love math? Do you want to solve more problems in a half hour than many people do in a day? Do you see math anywhere? Is math one of your favorite subjects? Do you wish your math class was longer? Do you inspire to be a mathlete? Do you wish to engage with other mathematically minded peers?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, perhaps Math Counts is the place for you! We meet every Tuesday morning in room 226 beginning at 7:30. Our first session will begin September 12th.

 Summer travel opportunity

Travel to Paris, Normandy and London this summer (June) as part of the UA Global Education Program. Open to current 6th - 8th graders this 8 day trip will focus on several internationally significant locations that directly link to the history of the United States. This tour is a great extension of or precursor to the district's traditional 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip.

Geography Bee

The Hastings Geographic Bee will begin in mid-November. Students will have the opportunity to take part in the beginning phases of the Bee in their Social Studies classes or Enrichment. Mr. Wylie will have fun Geography Bee Club sessions after school in October/November to review and prepare for the Bee. There will be morning announcements regarding these club sessions. Each grade level will have 3 finalists competing in the Hastings Geographic Bee on Thursday, December 14, at 3:30 p.m. in the Media Center.

Eighth-grade Washington D.C. Trip

Required Meeting for 8th Graders and Parents October

Planning has begun for this year’s 8th grade trip to Washington DC, scheduled for

April 30-May 3, 2018. In order to ensure that we meet all deadlines and that our expectations are clear, we are asking all students who are interested in going on the trip and at least one of their parents to attend a meeting in the Hastings auditorium on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. In addition to our school-based coordinator and administrators, a representative from Discovery Tours will be in attendance to discuss the registration process and answer questions regarding the trip.
Students will not be permitted to go on the trip unless a parent attends both the October

11 meeting and the spring meeting (Monday, April 16, 2018, 7:30 p.m.). If unable to attend the October 11 meeting at Hastings, parents and students must attend the Jones meeting on October 9, 7:00 p.m., in the Jones auditorium.

★ Hastings Robotics Club

Students that belong to the Hastings Robotics Club design and build a robot to compete in the National Robotics Challenge held in Marion Ohio on April 12th-14th. The Robotics Club will meet Wednesdays after school starting in November from 3:30 to 4:30 in room 119. The club will also meet during lunch on days to be announced and potentially a few weekends. Welcome to all Hastings Families from PTO! Many thanks to the multitude of volunteers who have pitched in to make the school year start off so well!

Nurse's Notes

Is your child is showing signs of illness? It can be a difficult decision deciding whether your child is too ill to go to school. Often it is best to keep them home. Not only will they heal quicker it will also help to control the spread of germs at school.

Some guidelines for deciding to keep your child home include:

Fever of 100 degrees or above—they should remain at home until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours (without the use of fever-controlling medicine).
Taking an antibiotic— it is best to remain home until they have completed the first 24 hours of the antibiotic.
Vomiting more than 1 time, or has vomiting plus other signs of illness.
Diarrhea - 3 or more times (not caused by a change in diet or medication).
Cough that is persistent, productive , accompanied by a fever and / or would disrupt classroom.
Please inform the school nurse if your child has a communicable disease such as strep throat or chicken pox.

We have students who can have serious consequences if exposed to strep and other illnesses.

Remember: hand-washing is the best way to prevent disease.

And don’t forget to cover your cough. These measures will help to control the spread of illness throughout our school.
