We were recently visited by educators comprising the Eastern Consortium of Superintendents representing school districts as far away as Louisiana. During this visit I was asked about Hastings and specifically what made our school unique. This was an easy answer: the students. Our students exemplify a spirit and eagerness to learn, have the energy to make our middle school days fun, and represent our building and UA with pride during events like HIP and HOP day during the early part of the school year. This is no accident; years of nurturing by our entire learning community coupled with an unwavering commitment to help all students “serve, lead, and succeed.”
With that stated, I could not be more excited to not only share with our visitors the great service learning going on, but also the academic rigor to help student to be successful at UAHS and beyond. In the coming weeks our students will be starting to participate in over 20 clubs and will be wrapping up the 1st of our three sport seasons. Before we know it, will be winter concert season filled with the sounds of our student musical talents. Regardless of the activity, my hope is that your family will be able to enjoy the showcasing of your students’ abilities through these uniquely UA opportunities.
Additionally, look for information on parents meetings and forums regarding school matters in the coming months. We are busy planning engaging conversations with various speakers to further enhance everyone's experience at HMS both during this and further school years. If I can be of any help in the education of your child, please do not hesitate to call or email any time. Enjoy all the fall activities at Hastings and in UA. Dear Hastings Community,
I wanted to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude for the smooth start to our school year from a pickup and drop off perspective. The changes that were put in place last year to help alleviate traffic and safety issues have taken hold and we couldn’t be more pleased with how things are running.
Please continue to pull completely up to the next open cone when dropping off in the back of the building during the morning. We also appreciate the respect shown to our neighbors by keeping driveways unblocked and using caution around the crosswalks. Also, if your child rides a bike to school, please help us reinforce the expectation of walking their bike once they get on school property. This helps keep students safe while car traffic is heavy in the parking lots and foot traffic is heavy on sidewalks.
We are currently working with transportation to tighten up bus student pick up in the afternoon. While the time between dismissal and our last bus arriving hasn’t been too much of a problem in the spring, we know the winter months will be more challenging. We will monitor the situation and adjust accordingly as the weather dictates.
On that note, please don’t hesitate to communicate any issues that you see concerning our morning and afternoon procedures. We are always looking for ways to improve the experience for parents and students and to help better ensure safety for all.
★ Eighth-grade Washington D.C. Trip
Required Meeting for 8th Graders and Parents October 12, 7:30 p.m
Planning has begun for this year’s 8th grade trip to Washington DC, scheduled for May 9-12, 2017. In order to ensure that we meet all deadlines and that our expectations are clear, we are asking all students who are interested in going on the trip and at least one of their parents to attend a meeting in the Hastings auditorium on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. In addition to our school-based coordinators and administrators, a representative from Discovery Tours will be in attendance to discuss the registration process and answer questions regarding the trip.
Students will not be permitted to go on the trip unless a parent attends both the October 12 meeting and the spring meeting (Monday, April 24, 2017, 7:30 p.m.). If unable to attend the October 12 meeting at Hastings, parents and students must attend the Jones meeting on October 10, 7:30 p.m., in the Jones auditorium.

★ Seventh-grade Pittsburgh Trip
Required Parent Meeting on Monday, October 10th from 7 to 8pm. We are getting excited for our first-ever class trip to Pittsburgh on November 3 & 4! At least one parent is required to attend the upcoming October 10th meeting in order for their child to attend. You will learn all of the logistics for the trip at this meeting along with a chance to meet your child's chaperone for the trip. See you there!
★ Sixth-grade Camp
Sixth-grade camp has been an Upper Arlington tradition for over thirty years!
This year's camp was a sloppy success as campers worked and learned together through a rainy week.
★ Geography Bee
The Hastings Geographic Bee will begin in mid-November. Students will have the opportunity to take part in the beginning phases of the Bee in their Social Studies classes or Enrichment. Mr. Wylie will have review sessions after school in October/November to review and prepare for the Bee. There will be morning announcements regarding these review sessions. Each grade level will have 3 finalists competing in the Hastings Geographic Bee on Thursday, December 8, at 3:30 p.m. in the Media Center.
★ Robotics Club
Students that belong to the Hastings Robotics Club design and build a robot to compete in the National Robotics Challenge held in Marion Ohio on April 8th & 9th. The Robotics Club will meet Wednesdays after school starting in November from 3:30 to 4:30 in room 119. The club will also meet during lunch on days to be announced and potentially a few weekends. Do you love math? Do you want to solve more problems in a half hour than many people do in a day? Do you see math anywhere? Is math one of your favorite subjects? Do you wish your math class was longer? Do you inspire to be a mathlete? Do you wish to engage with other mathematically minded peers?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, perhaps Math Counts is the place for you! We meet every Tuesday morning in room 226 beginning at 7:30. Our first session will begin September 13th.

★ Guitar Club
Guitar Club is a way to get together with other Hastings students who love music. It doesn't matter if you are a shredding face-melting solo artist or you've never played before. We will learn to play some basic guitar chords, some songs, and meet some new friends. We meet once a week starting in mid-November, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the Music Room. Students are welcome to bring a guitar if they own one, or borrow one of the school's instruments. All students are welcome to join. ★ Archery Club meets after school until 4:30 p.m. for a month in the spring, weather permitting. Along with the basics of archery, history, Olympic competition and safety are reviewed. All students are welcome. A permission slip must be on file with Mr. Lloyd before being able to participate. No experience necessary.
★ Ping Pong Club
Hastings Ping Pong Club meets on Friday afternoons in January and February from 3:30-4:30pm. No prior experience is necessary and the club is open to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Please note: because we meet on the same day as Ski Club, students in Ski Club are not eligible to participate in the Hastings Ping Pong Club. ★ Deutschklub (German Club)
Students have the opportunity during Deutschklub to meet with fellow students to speak German and experience German holidays, traditions, games, and events. Meeting monthly, Deutschklub meetings are a great place to learn more about the language and culture and to have fun; all 7th and 8th grade German students and all 6th graders are welcome to join.
Vielen Dank an die ZfA!Many thanks to our partners at the German Central Agency for Schools Abroad for their generous grant for classroom materials! The German department was able to buy lots of exciting things from children’s books to educational games, and even new maps. Thanks to their generosity, our German teachers are able to bring lots of realia and even a little piece of Germany into the classroom!
★ Cercle Français (French Club)
At Cercle Français, students experience French language and culture first hand. We try French games and sports, make crafts, cook, celebrate French/Francophone holidays, traditions, and special events. Cercle Français meets once a month after school from 3:30-4:30 in Madame Smith's classroom (RM 214), and will have events all week for National French Week this November! All 7th and 8th graders French students, as well as ALL 6th graders are welcome to join. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 14 and our second meeting will be Tuesday, October 11. ★If you are a French student in grades 7, 8, and 9 this school year, then you have the opportunity to put your French into action! Yearbook Club will meet again on Wednesday, September 30th from 3:30-4:30 in Ms. Egbert's classroom (Room 113). All sixth, seventh and eighth grade students are welcome to help create the annual HMS Yearbook. Students will plan the yearbook theme and appearance, take pictures at school and community events, and then organize the yearbook pages. ★Hastings Spelling Bee
For all students interested in the spelling bee, the qualifier will take place on Tuesday, December 13th at 3:30pm. The Hastings/Jones spelling bee will be held on Wednesday, January 11th at Hastings beginning at 9:00am. Students can practice their spelling skills by going to www.myspellit.com

The 6th grade language arts classes recently came to the media center and learned how to download a QR extension to their laptops. They then used this new extension to read QR codes to learn more about the media center’s procedures and resources.
HOP Day: Hastings Outreach Program
On September 2, approximately 690 students, 30 parent volunteers, and 75 faculty members had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the eighth annual Hastings HOP day. The Hastings Outreach Program (HOP) sponsored a day of service learning for all of our students and faculty. In keeping with our district's strategic plan, we wanted to provide all students and faculty with opportunities to be engaged in at least one service learning experience this year. Service to others is a crucial part in helping our students understand what it means to be citizens of a global community. Our goal was for students to understand how skills they learn in the classroom can be used for opportunities outside of the classroom.
Our day of service began with a guest speaker, Kim Emch from SON Ministries, and the day ended with a celebration sponsored by the PTO and a whole-school assembly to recap some of the service activities that students participated in throughout the day. We would like to thank the following people/organizations for their support:

Sixth grade students, staff and parents took part in various activities that helped give back to the local communities of Upper Arlington and surrounding areas. Students got the community involved by organizing a community food drive. Food collected was donated to Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
We also partnered up with Burbank Early Childhood Center, Mountview Preschool, St. Andrews Preschool, Citizens for Humane Action and Habitat for Humanity on HOP day.
Seventh grade students and staff visited Highbanks Metro Park, Whetstone Park, Indian Village, Franklin Park Conservatory, Camp Oty Okwa, Griggs Reservoir and Battelle Darby Metro Park. Students put elements from their science, math, health, life skills, and PE curriculums into practice. Students learned about various jobs within their service site and worked in conjunction with the staffs.
Students volunteered their time participating in activities such as: weeding flower beds, mulching, pruning trails, tearing out invasive species and picking up litter.
LifeCare Alliance, sponsor of the Franklin County Meals on Wheels program, and its dining centers were one of the recipients of the service performed by the 8th grade students and staff. Students prepared food, organized meals, delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program, played Bingo and enjoyed lunch with some of the dining center patrons.
A second recipient of 8th grade service was Mid-Ohio Foodbank. Students and staff worked in the food reclamation area at Mid-Ohio Foodbank and were able to learn about how the organization uses the donations they receive from the community.
A third location this year was the Dublin Food Pantry and Welcome Warehouse. Our students learned about their food bank and how they use resources donated to them to give back to the local community.
We visited Neighborhood Services for the second time this year; students were able to learn about this organization and the programs it sponsors (food pantry, tax services, school supply drive, etc.) and provide service cleaning, painting and stocking shelves.
A small group of students traveled to schools within our district and painted new disability stencils in our parking lots.
The presence of Hastings students and staff was felt all throughout central Ohio on HOP Day! We look forward to carrying on the tradition again next year!
Is your child is showing signs of illness? It can be a difficult decision deciding whether your child is too ill to go to school. Often it is best to keep them home. Not only will they heal quicker it will also help to control the spread of germs at school.
Some guidelines for deciding to keep your child home include:
- Fever of 100 degrees or above—they should remain at home until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours (without the use of fever-controlling medicine).
- Taking an antibiotic— it is best to remain home until they have completed the first 24 hours of the antibiotic.
- Vomiting more than 1 time, or has vomiting plus other signs of illness.
- Diarrhea - 3 or more times (not caused by a change in diet or medication).
- Cough that is persistent, productive , accompanied by a fever and / or would disrupt classroom.
Please inform the school nurse if your child has a communicable disease such as strep throat or chicken pox.
We have students who can have serious consequences if exposed to strep and other illnesses.
Remember: hand-washing is the best way to prevent disease.
And don’t forget to cover your cough. These measures will help to control the spread of illness throughout our school.
